The Legendary Of Gotham City

While no doubt a controversial PC release, most, if not all, of the technical issues this game launched with have been well ironed out at this point. And outside of that I'd dare to say that Arkham Knight, while maybe not as exciting as previous titles in the series, is a great game.

As far as gameplay goes, the freeflow combat system is still an incredibly fun and satisfying gameplay system to battle with, and the predator encounters are still tense and engaging. But both of these systems lack the shine they once had when the series first began all those years ago due to general franchise fatigue. But I can't imagine any way to make any real groundbreaking improvments on either front.

The introduction of a playable batmobile seems to have been an attempt to battle this fatigue, and in some respects it succeeds. I found it exhilarating to race through the streets, chasing down enemies and completing races. But while they are fun at the start, on the whole the tank battles sections are not varied or complex enough to be very engaging. There is also an extremely dissappointing absence of interesting boss fights, which the series has lauded for in past titles. Almost every boss encounter is a slight variation of either the freeflow, predator, or tank battles systems.

The legendary setting of Gotham City has also never been more detailed and full of life though. And not only in any other game, but also any other medium. It is an absolute blast to glide around Gotham and appreciate all the care and detail that was put into its construction. But the lack of complex interior environments is a dissapointment.

The game's story is maybe its most impressive feat, and is anchored by a miriad of outstanding performances. The pacing is outstanding with each story beat being followed by an even better one. It has such an incredibly strong start, which it confidently builds on until the very end. Never before has there been such an enthralling narrative that successfully delves into Batman's mental and emotional psyche.

But with that being said, my biggest complaint (in terms of both the story and entire game) is that many iconic Batman villians are given a bit of the short stick in their side missions. Characters that have dense wonderful stories in the comics; like Hush, Deacon Blackfire, and Ra's al Ghul; are quickly and unceremoniously rushed out the door in an obvious attempt to ties up all the series' loose ends. And while I consider this a true travesty, I'll still confidently say that Batman Arkham Knight is a great game.
